Homemade Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

Sharing is caring!

When it comes to comfort food I believe all moms should have a good cookie recipe.  Growing up our homemade peanut butter cookies were a big hit.  Whether it’s for a treat or for a play date this is a delicious recipe adjusted from my own mother’s recipe.  Mine recipe turned it into peanut butter chocolate chip cookies with just a hint of cinnamon and even less butter than my mom’s version.

One other really great this about these cookies is they are healthy.  They are whole grain, low sugar, and high protein.

Making Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

Before you get started you want a good non-stick baking sheet for the cookies.  This one available on Amazon is the same as the one I use which we picked up at a yard sale.  I don’t usually use baking paper instead I lightly spray my pan with olive oil.

Next, comes mixing.  The best way to get all the ingredients to combine properly is to use two bowls.  One for dry and one for wet ingredients then finally mix everything together.

Dry Ingredients

So separate all of your dry ingredients.  Flour, oats, wheat germ, dry powdered milk, baking powder, cinnamon and mix in the peanut butter chocolate chips last.  My favorite whole wheat flour is King Arthur.  This is by far the best whole wheat flour.  I get mine at Walmart but it’s also available all over.

You might have trouble finding wheat germ.  It is often found in the cereal aisle instead of baking.   Wheat germ is one of the really good ingredients you don’t want to miss out on.

If you’ve never used wheat germ in your baking you should. Wheat germ is the good stuff that’s pulled out of wheat to make it white flour. It’s all that healthy protein, fiber, potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, and manganese [1]. Yes, it’s a ton of gluten so if you’re intolerant you can substitute more oats instead of the wheat germ and use gluten-free flour.

Once you mix the flour, oats, wheat germ, powdered milk, cinnamon, and baking powder feel free to add the peanut butter chocolate chips.  I absolutely love the Nestle Toll House chips.

Wet Ingredients

Then move onto the wet ingredients.  Start with the egg first just in case it’s a bad one.  Use the peanut butter in the measuring cup before the honey so it doesn’t stick too much.  And remember to soften the butter.

Now combine the two mixes and mix well.   You should have a pretty thick mixture.  Depending on how many cookies you want you need to pick your size.  A quarter-sized ball is pretty small and a golf ball is on the big side.  Somewhere in between is where you get 24 cookies.

Bake Time

Remember your bake time is different if you pick a different size.  The medium size cookies are about 9 minutes in my stove at 375.  You want a firm cookie so you can be sure the egg gets cooked.
