Time Management with a Toddler

Sharing is caring!

My son is sick.  Everything seems to be moving slower.  I’ve gotten just about nothing done this week.  Time management with a toddler?  I’m not quite sure it really exists.

There’s always something to get done and there never seems to be an end to the messiness.  We only have so much time.  It’s eventually going to end.  Your child is only young once.  And there’s always something on the to-do list.  It might be best to focus on them and not on the mess in your house.

Depending on who you believe time management is a croc or the only way to be efficient and effective.  We only have 24 hours a day and we all need to eat, sleep and function so as for me, I’m going to plan.

Here are 3 ways to make you a little happier with what you can do right now:

  1. Write the to-do list but don’t over do it
  2. Have a plan for the day but be ready to change it
  3. Have a schedule of the stuff that matters

The To-Do List

I usually have 3 things-to-do in a day.  Something for the business, something to do with my toddler and something to do for the house.  Each of those things is attempted on the day that they are scheduled.  Three things seem to be the max of the day.  If  I have too much on the to-do list I get nothing done at all.  It just gets too overwhelming.  I try and fail and then have more to do the next day.

Plan, But NOT Every Second

I have a planner where I keep appointments and stuff we do every day.  I’m not always good about keeping it up to date.  It’s on my Sunday to-do list and then trying to write things down when they change.  I rarely remember appointments out beyond a day so they have to go in the planner.

Schedule or Not to Schedule?

I have a schedule for the blog and my job and trying to track my good habits.  I also have a schedule for homeschooling.  Overall it’s a guide to what to do.  It’s separate from my planner because of how hourly it is.

Take Away from Time Management with a Toddler

One of the things I learned when I was reading about scheduling and time management is that it takes time.  Often that means overdoing it is actually a waste of time.  It’s important to know what you’re supposed to do and when but the more you obsess with everything you need to do the more time you take away from other things.  So try not to overdo it.  And enjoy your time with your child.
