Homeschool Pre-K Curriculum (free printable)

Sharing is caring!

This is Pre-K year for Aiden.  I feel like we’re still playing like playschool preschool last year.  Our goal is to get two subjects in a day and have Aiden reading early readers by the end of this school year.  This is our schedule and curriculum for pre-k.   Every new year has its challenges but it should be full of fun and excitement because learning is fun.

I spent some time digging for some really good pre-k curriculum for this year.  I have some textbooks, hands-on learning, and, a play program that I’ve purchased here.  This our list of the curriculum.  Mind you I’m not an expert.  I was homeschool and I’m hoping to raise my really smart kid into a really smart adult.  I love teaching but I am not an early education teacher I’m just a mom who still learning too.  As we use each of these books I will do a little more in-depth post on them.  Check back later on in the school year.

Homeschooling Pre-K

Even though I was homeschooled I really didn’t have much to do with the process until I was in middle school level learning.  I thought it would help to find some idea books and some guidebooks for homeschooling.  This one is pretty fun.  With 500+ ideas it should be good for a few years of learning not just for this year.

Slow and Steady Get Me Ready for Kindergarten is an activities book for pre-k as young as zero.  Lots of ideas for younger kids.  This one is more geared towards kindergarten in the school system.  Written by Kindergarten teacher, it helps caregivers and parents make kindergarten easier.  I’m using it as another idea book.

Workbook for Pre-K

Workbook: Big Preschool.  I think we will need something for one the go so we grabbed this one.  It covers prewriting, prereading, and phonics.  It’s for the days when we aren’t at home.

Reading Pre-K

We absolutely love Bob Books and Pete the Cat Easy Readers.  My goal this year is to get a reader out of him.

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.  I picked out this book because it’s the same one my mom used with me and my three brothers.  All of us are dyslexic so I thought if it worked for us it should be an amazing book. It uses the DISTAR reading method which appears to outperform other methods for early reading.  Each lesson is between 15 and 20 minutes long which is perfect for this age range. The first lesson is M and S.

Pre-K Writing

If you’ve read my playschool preschool post you’ve seen this one already.  I absolutely love whiteboard style books for writing. His handwriting has definitely gotten better since we’ve been using this leapfrog book and we decided to purchase another one this year that’s a little more advanced (Pre-K write and wipe).  I love that this book groups the letters bylines and not in order. They also have a ton of places to practice different lines too.

Pre-K Math

Much of what we’ve done so far on math is counting and patterns. We found two things at the thrift store that I absolutely love.  The first one is a write-and-wipe book. It helps with tracking numbers. We also found something was another throwback for me. Calculators.  Do you remember these? You have 1+1 then if you push the button the answer is on the bottom.  I found these for $2 apiece.  I had no idea how much they were worth.

He loves hitting the buttons and finding patterns.  An awesome investment.  Keep an eye out at yard sales and thrift shops.

Pre-K Science

We will continue our “what is it?” from preschool.  We will also be getting a membership to Discovery Space.  Discovery Space is a hands-on science center for kids.  They have tons of stuff to do.  It’s as structured or unstructured as you want it to be.   Morning classes are available for different ages.  It’s a great place to encourage the little mad scientist without the mess at home.

Pre-K Art

My little artist is all about the finger paint.  We usually get ours from the dollar store and it usually goes all over him and the posterboard.  So much of our art is outside.  He’s started to draw shapes so he’s got a few markers and pens.

We’re also very carefully working with scissors.  He loves cutting up construction paper with his tweezers (scissors).  It seemed to make the most sense to him.  He’s moved from trying to cut with both hands to squeeze the scissors with one hand like tweezers.

Pre-K Social Studies

I’m still looking for some appropriate books for social studies.  It may wind up being books from the library based on our monthly theme or what he wants to learn about that week.

Field Trips

We’re going to try to do a least one field trip a month.  You’ll have to check back for the list. We are doing a trip to Strasburg train station this month to see Thomas the Tank engine.  This will be our third year to see Thomas.

The plan is a monthly theme.  The fall season is September’s theme.  We’ve been talking about leaves, seeds, and bugs.

  1. In Germany you cannot really homeschool, but we do want to have a flexible schooling system for our daughter. So that’s helpful!

  2. This are all interesting and educational books and thank you for sharing them. My son is still 6 months old now, but I am already researching on how can I teach him, glad that there are books like this to help in the process.
