Reading can be a huge struggle. Learning single letter sounds, recognizing upper and lower case letters, knowing what combinations of letters sound like, and being able to remember sight words is a giant challenge. Looking at different types of texted books left us wondering what would work best for a kid who doesn’t sit still. After trying a few not super successfully, I discover my son does best with sentences to read, words to write, and activities to play. So I decided to make my own alphabet workbooks for him.

Reading is the main goal when you start homeschooling. Once your child can read everything is open to them. They can teach themselves about the things they are interested in without help. Their learning becomes easier, comprehension of the language they speak becomes fuller, and vocabulary becomes stronger. In short, they become smarter.

The foundations of reading come from phonics and word recognition. If you read to your kids, speak to them with intent, and give them opportunities to see words whether or not they read them will help with learning.

This is the goal for my alphabet workbooks. Each one has a week’s worth of work or more. Some simple words and other complex ones are in the word tracing pages.

With each word is a picture meant to help clue them into the word and help them associate that word for memory. It’s okay if they don’t know it but practice writing. The next time they see it, it might just flow out. Regardless, it gives them a chance to practice their writing skills. The simpler words can be memorized and practiced as spelling words if you want to. Or you can use them to let your child build a sentence. Writing a sentence is one of Aiden’s favorite ways to practice new words.

If your child likes to color there are four coloring pages in each workbook. Color them and hang them up around the house. If your child dislikes coloring, print them out anyway and hang them up. Each one has a simple sentence and the word associated with the picture. Seeing it every day can increase their vocabulary.

Finding upper and lowercase letters can be tricky. My own B’s, D’s, P’s, and Q’s get mixed up sometimes (dyslexia runs in the family). To help with recognition you will find mazes, letter spotting, and playdough mats. There’s also an add the letter page in some of the workbooks. You can use upper and lowercase letters to fill in the blanks.

Active play is one of our favorite learning tools. We use board games, toys, and nature for some of our learning activities. Each workbook has 2 simple activities to do. Some have active adventures or are simple science. While others are crafts and games. Most require things you should have at home or are cheap to purchase and easy to come by. Others you can find while you’re outside learning.
