Legos for Learning, Why You Need a Big Bin of Legos

Sharing is caring!

Legos are an amazing learning tool.  We spend a ton of time playing with legos.  We have tons of legos from when my brothers were young and plenty more from now.  They are an essential piece of our homeschooling day.  You can use them for pretty much anything STEM-related and with a marker for literature.  As kids, my brothers and I had access to a toy chest full of legos.  From classics to kits that we could play with.  Naturally, they have been passed down for my little dude.

Why Do You NEED a Big Bin of Legos?

But why do you need a big bin of legos?  Legos are one of the most versatile toys available.  Tons of colors and shapes and different moving parts to play with.  Get a box of classic legos and build anything you can think of.  Aiden’s favorite set of classic legos came with wheels.

STEM lessons can be enhanced by legos.  Learning about bridges?  Build one.  What’s the best shape for a boat?  Build a few.  See what floats the best.  Working on the times’ tables?  Make your piles out of legos.  Learning about areas? Build the shape and do the problem. Practicing word endings? Write on the blocks and make words. There are thousands of possibilities.

Use your imagination and create a world of your own. Legos are completely open-ended.  Make whatever you like.  You can check out tons of patterns or just make something completely out of your imagination.  There are books that teach you how to make pretty much anything out of legos. There’s so much you can do.

How Can You Get a Ton of Legos?

How do you get your hands on a ton of legos?  Well for me it started out with what I could play with as a kid.  Check in with the grandparents if they still have old toys.  Look for sales.  Or yard sales.

If you are looking for toys at your favorite store, watch for classic legos.  Classic legos have a list of things you can make, not what you should make like a regular kit.  Be smart about it. If your child loves cars get a set with wheels. If your child loves animals make sure you get a kit that has eyes and mouths. There are big and small sets. You don’t have to buy regular legos either. There are plenty of other brands that make bricks that will fit together too.

Combine your legos with a friend or two.  If you have a few friends who love legos you can work together to find the right pieces.  Trade and have fun together.

What do You Store the Legos in?

Storing your legos is a personality thing.  Some of my friends have their legos are color, size, and shape bins.  Beautiful draws of organized legos.  My family?   We have a huge toy box full of legos.  No rhyme or reason.  Just a ton of legos.  And yes they do get dumped out on a regular basis. I love having small bins for the stuff we need. Dig out the parts then the rest go back in the bin. Built to your heart’s content.

Another thing we have that I picked up at the dollar store was a box with a base. You can build on top and store some legos inside for car rides. This is one of the things they have at lego club too. It’s how they display the lego creations when the kids are done.

I do highly recommend finding something that works well for your family.  Because the last thing you want to do at 2 am is to step on a loose lego.

Where Can You Play with Legos?

We play with legos at the park and at home.  Sometimes taking some with us to a friend’s house.  Aiden’s also been attending the Lego club at the library.  He gets to put his build in the glass case and show it off for a whole week.  It’s a great opportunity for him to come up with a completely new thing.

If he’s stuck coming to work with me, he’s always got a few legos along. Another find, we found at the dollar store were bases with roads. They’re smooth on some parts and other parts have space to build bricks. Although they’re bigger than his hot wheels cars (another favorite for another day) he contently plays with them too.
