Sharing is caring!

When you’re stuck in a house on a rainy day with nothing to do, it’s not very good for an active kid. He needs to run around having fun.  We had a few ideas that seem to help.  Honestly, we’ve been getting bored and decided to reach out for some new ideas.  So I asked a few bloggers some of their rainy day ideas do when it’s too wet to play outside.

Rainy Day Roundup

For us, we usually try to do some reading and a lot of boxcar driving.  But that doesn’t usually last for never long.  So we’ve been working on a list of fun stuff to do.  That doesn’t mean watching a screen for hours.

Parenting Expert to Mom, Kayla has quite the list.  Check out her 13 rainy day ideas including splashing in the mud puddles, rotating toys, and fort building.

Katelyn from What’s Up Fagans created a 13 idea quiet activities roundup.  One of the ideas I really like is the quiet box with all kinds of things.  And long audiobooks as an excellent distraction.

Make Something Yummy or Fun

Ideally something you can use after making.  The first thing that comes to mind is baking something.  Aiden loves to play chef and will make quite the feast of pretend food.  So when I allow him to help me cook he’s quite happy.

Something to Eat

We bake cookies or muffins.  Or he helped me make dinner.

Pie offered a bunch of low carb recipes from her Low Carb Yum blog.  Check out her recipes:

Zucchini Pizza Bites looks like a brilliant way to get your kids to eat more veggies. And even Chocolate Cupcakes Nutella Frosting which looks quite good.

Something to Play With

Or make something to play with like play dough or slime.  Yes, messy but it’s hard to contain active without something different.

If you’re looking for a great play-doh recipe, Rebecca has a nice gluten-free playdoh recipe here.  Which is fantastic for anyone who has a gluten allergy.  She also uses an all-natural dye.

And check out Carleen’s sand slime recipe.  It looks like it has a really nice texture to it.

Shari at Diary of a So Cal Mama came up with three very easy and cheap ideas here.  Great for a little concentration and hopefully a little peace and quiet with her DIY simple toys.

Create Something New

Much of the time Aiden just wanted to draw.  So pictures are a good place to start. Usually, he gets a stack of construction or other colored paper and draws on the front and backs of everything.

Carleen created a really cute butterfly with a few dollar store items and a wine cork.  Check her DIY here.

This DIY should be doable with even a very young toddler as Lisa explains her friend’s almost 2-year-old did this craft.  A yarn heart.

Pretend Something

We definitely play chief a lot.  He can’t get enough of making food and getting me to “eat” it.  We have a beautiful set of pots and pans and fruits and vegetables from Melissa and Doug that we found at a garage sale this summer.  Which is completely fun to play with.

Or you can purchase directly from Melissa and Doug with their special offer here.  Spend $75 Get a Free Beach Memories Gift. Use BEACH75 at Checkout

Katelyn also had an imagination idea of playing a doctor.

This one is one of my favorites from Laura.  She created a dinosaur garden with some rocks and mini plastic dinosaurs.  It looks like a great one to make on your next dollar store trip.
